booklineandthinker 's review for:
The Legendary Scarlett and Browne
by Jonathan Stroud
A wild west, post-apocalyptic England where humour, bravery and derring-do exist in unrivalled fashion.
Compared to the previous two books in this series, The Legendary Scarlett and Browne feels like it's less about rollicking adventure and more about serious completion of story arc. Stakes feel much higher, and there is certainly more planning going into the protagonists' heists. And that final set-piece: massive!
There is still the trademark Stroud banter and humour, although to me it felt like it was less frequent than previously. I guess in this outing there's less opportunity to let it shine through, as the entire plot is much more serious in it's scope.
Yes this is a book series for teens, but it is both inventive and brilliant; and there are many, many adult-targetted books that don't even come close to the ability Stroud has for story-telling.
