First of at least seven novels in the Gentlemen Bastard series. Quasi-medieval fantasy of aristocrats, priests, thieves, and magicians not on Earth and with some traces of ancient non-humans. Pretty standard sword and sorcery. Cozy with constant murderous mayhem, cf.  Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser #1
