When the library circ clerk saw I was borrowing this book, she said, "You're in for a good read." I knew the hype about this book in my suburban town near Seattle where this story takes place, so I had high hopes and feared I might be disappointed. A few pages into this book, though, I knew I was in the hands of a master craftsman of an author. Brown tells the true story of the University of Washington crew team that scrapes and claws their way to victory in the 1936 Olympics. I still wondered how Brown could keep my attention given that I already knew the outcome from the subtitle of the book. Let's just say that Brown gets down and dirty with the details, sparing nothing to tell his story. Get thyself to a bookstore or library and read this book! A "Young Readers Edition" is due out in Sept 2015, and as the parent of a soon-to-be 13 year old boy, I'm gonna buy multiple copies and give them to him and all his friends. This is a story all young men need to hear and read, because it centers on one of the most down-and-out kids in the boat, Joe Rantz, who despite the death of his mother when he was very young and the neglect of his family, never gives up or throws a pity party for himself. As a teacher-librarian, I can't wait to read excerpts of this book to my students and share it with their teachers -- it's revolutionary!
