This was the first King Arthur inspired retelling I’ve read and I am very, very impressed. Deonn weaves together a bunch of really complex themes into the novel including generational racism in society, handling microaggressions, death of a parent, grief, and sexual assault. Deonn handles everything incredibly well and makes all of these themes really easy to digest while still being incredibly thoughtful with how the characters handle these themes. The internal dialogue about everything feels really natural.

The build up is incredible. You start the book thinking one thing, thinking you’ve got the book all figured out, but as Tracy Deonn slowly reveals more and more you begin to second guess everything you thought. The twists and turns make this book incredibly hard to put down, especially as you get towards the end and the plot really ramps up.

I love the different histories that Deonn includes in this book but that’s all i’m going to say about that because I don’t want to give spoilers. Deonn put a lot of thought into every aspect of this book. The book comes together in such a pleasing way and she ends it with a huge cliffhanger that leaves you wanting the next book, right now.
