Кровавая комната
by Angela Carter, Ольга Акимова, Анджела Картэр
challenging
dark
mysterious
reflective
medium-paced
I read only two stories from this book (“The Bloody Chamber” and “The Erl-King”), but I’m not sure I would want to finish the whole book in one go – perhaps I’ll return to it later, but for now I want to sit a bit ruminating on those two.
To begin with, Angela Carter writes in such a beautiful prose. There isn’t much dialogue in her stories, but the way she describes the surrounding and characters’ feeling and emotions is absolutely stunning.
This book is basically a collection of retellings of already known fairytales: Red Riding Hood, Blue Beard, The Erl-King etc. What Angela Carter does is add a pro-feminist tone to them, which makes you look at your favourite stories from a different angle. However, I still question whether these should qualify as “retellings” since Carter doesn’t really change a lot in terms of plot.
