Mitz: The Marmoset of Bloomsbury by Sigrid Nunez

5.0

A gem of a book. Truly exquisite. It tells the true - but obviously fictionalized - story of a marmoset (a little monkey) adopted by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. Some of it is told from Mitz's POV, some omniscient, it uses real events, people, and places, to tell a fictional tale. You feel immersed in the Woolfs' (sometimes known as the Woolves') world and you get a hint of what's to come between the imminent war and Virginia's mental health issues. It is a tiny, lovely novel that hit all of my sweet spots (which apparently include monkeys and writers).
