You know when you listen to someone telling you a story about something you know nothing about, so you feel like you're missing half of the point? That's what Fallen Shadows felt like. It read more like the second book in a series, where we've seen enough of the world to understand it, and after the main characters have already fallen for each other, had some issues and worked them out. Instead, the reader is plopped into a world they're expected to understand and into a romance already in full bloom (with no history given, I might add).
The writing was sometimes beautiful in its imagery, and other times seemed to try too hard for an old time feel. Much of the dialogue and inner thoughts of the MCs seemed out of place or just plain awkward.
Overall, I could have enjoyed the story and even the cringey characters had there been adequate world building.
