His Secret Illuminations by Scarlett Gale

adventurous emotional funny medium-paced

4.5

A small, shy monk paired up with a tall, buff warrior woman? It feels like the author wrote this especially for me because that is so far up my alley it’s ridiculous. Lucían is the sweetest cinnamon roll ever and Glory is so kind and patient with him as he discovers the world outside his monastery. There’s a lot of exploration of religious bigotry and sexual shame, which I thought was sensitively handled.

The pace was a little slow and meandering, especially at the beginning, but I loved the slow-burn tension between Lucían and Glory so much that I didn’t even mind that much. I love a road-trip trope and this was basically the fantasy version of that. Loved all the casual queer representation too, including Glory herself.

This is a duology but this book ended on a solid HFN, no real cliffhanger in terms of the romance.
