The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck

3.0

An interesting mix of memoir, history, and travel narrative. I admit my age bias - when I initially put this book on hold at the library, I assumed that the two brothers were young. Because only two young men would be crazy enough to travel the Oregon Trail now in a covered wagon, right? Wrong! These brothers are both over 60 years old - and must be in much better shape than me. It was neat to read about how much of the trail is still there. They faced quite a few daunting obstacles on the way, geographically, weather-wise, and with equipment. My favorite parts of the book were their interactions with ranchers, farmers, and folks along the way. There's a well-spring of goodness and generosity out there.
