Revolution and war in Iran give rise to fantasy stories about a family that has fled from Tehran to a remote village by an ancient forest. Ghosts, dreams, and imaginary creatures share space with the most grim and grisly terrors perpetrated by humans. The storytelling is rambling and convoluted, with a certain amount of creative momentum, but bogged down by what seems to be a clumsy and poorly edited translation. At the end, I felt I'd spent most of the time of reading in the head of someone driven to dissociation from reality by trauma.
