Grime and Punishment by Dav Pilkey

This review is for parents looking for books for their kids to read so BEWARE there are spoilers:

I was very skeptical about reading Dog Man. What the heck is a Dog Man? Why are my nieces and nephews obsessed with this aggrandized comic book? How could anything associated with Captain Underpants be good??

I have read Dog Man, repented, and now I stand on my soap box to preach to you all of its merits.

It's actually quite cute and had a sweet message. One story line involves Petey and his problems with the father who abandoned him. His adorable son, Lil Petey, teaches him to forgive. When Petey tells his father he forgives him, I expected a cheesy hug and for everyone to go out and get tacos. BUT Petey's father laughs and cries, "Forgive me for what? I never did anything to you!" Petey leaves with his son, happy because he has forgiven his father, not because he has received anything in return. THIS was the realistic response that I didn't know I needed to hear until I read it. It was quite beautiful for a comic where a dog's head has been sewn onto a man's body...

If you are unsure if this book is for your kid, the best thing to do is read it yourself! It took me less than 30 minutes to read.

Age level: This is a good chapter book for early readers (1st-3rd grade).
