A Touch of Jen
by Beth Morgan
A loose four but what is attempted here is worth a five star. The ending is rushed, I assume to keep the reader turning pages, but it starts to get a little out of control before landing perfectly. I preferred the first half’s slow burn of highlighting the horror behind relationships through social media, obsession, and ennui. Beth Morgan has a knack for making conversations and observations about broken people that are horrifying. I called this a social horror, which I don’t really know what that means?, when discussing with friends because so much terror arose from statements and opinions. I don’t generally enjoy novels with unlikable characters but these characters are more broken/learned helplessness than rotten/evil, which keeps the edge off. Not for the faint of heart, but for those who want to explore the dark side of social media, modern relationships, self-help jargon, and obsession.
