The Vampire Lestat
by Anne Rice
Pros: This filled in a lot of gaps from the first book and added a lot of depth to the story from Lestat’s perspective. Introduced new characters and broadened existing ones. Pleasantly gay (but not erotic).
Cons: I just couldn’t get past the whole rock star thing. I get why it happened, but man, it was a stretch for me. Especially starting there. I laughed out loud. And Lestat saying “Sorry if my language isn’t consistent; I’ve been around awhile” felt like an author cop out. You couldn’t be bothered to give him a consistent voice? It could even be consistent in its inconsistency without having to be pointed out.
Overall, fun to read, easy enough to tune in and out, but not especially memorable. I would probably have loved this as a teenager.
