Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

4.0

4.5 stars. Harrow the Ninth takes the fun parts of Gideon the Ninth and blows it into the stratosphere. There is an extremely unreliable narrator and a unique play on the narrative perspectives (use of 2nd person was one of the most ingenious I've seen) creating a rather mindfuck experience for the reader all to hide a giant (obvious in retrospect) secret.

Like the other reviewers, I had no idea what was happening, and I was genuinely confused by the discrepancies between the first and second books, eg the characters who died, the names etc, and was thrilled when the secret was revealed. The humor got me through the baffling first parts until I caved in and read summary articles. I also enjoyed the characterization more this time round. The banter between the different Lyctors was really funny. And of course, God/John/the Emperor. Loved the direction his character went.

It takes patience and dedication to get through a Tamsyn Muir book but the payoff in the last 10% is pretty awesome.

I also listened to the audiobook for the first half and enjoyed the narrator's voices for all the characters, especially Mercymorn and Harrow. Hilarious performances.
