The Beckoning Shadow by Katharyn Blair

3.0

This book had so much potential and it started off with such a great start. However, it began to lose me about halfway through the book. I felt less engaged to the story and not as interested into knowing what was going to happen.

Plus side. Fantastic characters. They felt real and truly themselves. I thought their powers and this world was a really fun development. It felt like X-Men but less trying to be superheros and more just trying to exist. Each type of power had its own category and they way they interacted with each other was interesting. Add that into some well developed characters and it made for a good read. However, it did feel like only Vesper and Sam were well developed and everyone else only existed to serve the main characters. I wished they had been more fleshed out so if needed, they could have stood on their own. The relationship between Sam and Vesper felt very real and very teenager-like. It was lust filled and driven and I appreciate the author adding that aspect into the book. Its a slow burn initially and then when it happens, it happens quickly. Not love but lust. And I think it was portrayed well.

I think when this story began to veer away from the competition is when it started to lose me as well. The competition was the main reason I wanted to read this story and for it to feel like such a small part of the story was a little disappointing. The story was still interesting but not what I was hoping for or expecting.

Overall, I thought this was a decent read. Not spectacular but not horrible. If you enjoy X-Men or any other superhero type story then I think you will enjoy this book.
