The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot
5.0
Thoroughly modern missy: In which young Maggie and Denis Thatcher struggle with their relationship and for supremacy against a backdrop of the miners’ strike, Soviet nuclear threats and rampant inflation. Maggie is at first infatuated with and then disdainful of the malformed Heath, whose father Macmillan condescended to her, and sees off the challenge from the red-haired wooden boy Kinnochio. But she is eventually swept away by the tide when a broken poll tax machine collides with the Gloriana on a sewage-filled River Tory, and never seen again. Honestly, the novel of all time.
