The Rooster House: A Ukrainian Family Story by Victoria Belim

4.0

The book describes the journey of Victoria, the author, to find her roots in Ukraine, after moving to the US at the age of 15 and later settling to live in Belgium. It begins with Victoria discovering the name of an unknown great-uncle in her grandfather's notebook. Soon it becomes clear that the great-uncle's disappearance has to do with KGB and that her relatives refuse to speak about it.

Determined to find out what happened to him, Victoria travels to Ukraine, where she hasn't visited for years. She stays with her grandmother at the countryside, helping with gardening and cooking. While she finds these tasks at first cumbersome and getting in the way of her research, doing them gives her a chance to build a new, closer relationship with her grandmother.

Little by little, Victoria learns about the history of her family and at the same time, the reader is educated about the history of Ukraine. She makes many new friends and learns about the culture and heritage of her country.

A touching quest into family secrets, finding one's roots, and a beautiful travel journal from a country under threat.
