Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion
5.0
Snapshot of the 60’s
Didion’s detached cool girl writing is observant, but void of opinion or maybe it just feels that way. Her matter-of-fact style strategically placing ideas next to one another to get the reader thinking in a certain direction. Each chapter an essay on the specifics: Pearl Harbor and the occupation of Hawaii, the rise of shot gun weddings and the Las Vegas little chapels, and the peace/hippie movement…to thwart abstract: essays on morality and self-respect. I was hooked. Didion is the real deal folks.
