The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
5.0
Wow, where do I even start. So the narrative structure of this is non-linear and character perspectives change each chapter. The best way I can think to describe it is as spiralling. At the beginning of the novel the chapters are quite far apart in terms of setting, but as the novel continues and the plot starts to spiral closer to the centre, the chapters and time line start to even out towards linearity. So this in itself automatically adds intrigue to the novel.
Then we have the two main characters, Celia and Marco, who are pawns in a two player magical war game. From life they have been respectively trained in their arts since they were children, and end up displaying their skills in the Night Circus. There is so much more to this novel than just a magical battle and I would be here all day trying to explain it all. Honestly, you just have to read it.
Perhaps my favourite aspect of this novel is the imagination that has gone into it. Whilst at the circus Celia and Marco conjure rooms full of splender. When, as a reader, I was taken through these rooms i truly felt as though I was there. I could close my eyes and smell and hear what was happening around me. I don't often feel this with a novel, which is why I find it so special.
