Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, & Advice for Living Your Best Life by Ali Wong

4.0

Loved this book! Vulgar is not my particular brand of comedy but I very much enjoy Ali Wong as a writer and actress. She and I are the same age so her very specific pop culture references were evocative for me. Many of her stories echo the upbringing of my husband, also the child of Asian immigrants who grew up in San Francisco. While remaining loyal to her family, she wrote of the importance of moving away from your hometown and also encouraged studying abroad.

Despite all of the gems throughout the book, the line that I enjoyed the most surprisingly came from her husband at the time. They encountered a real jerk in a parking lot as they were attempting to load their kids, stroller, and a bunch of baby stuff into their car.

“And then that asshole yelled, "Fuck you!" and drove away while your father ran after his car, screaming all sorts of terrible ways he was hoping the man would die. "I hope you die, you fuck! I hope you get stung by a thousand bees, and your glasses fall off and you die like Macaulay Culkin in My Girl, you Phish-listening fuck!"”
