The Stranger Upstairs
by Lisa M. Matlin
This is a great debut novel. It isn’t just a solid thriller (full of twists, escalating tension, all the good stuff) but also a very refreshing take on millennial anxieties. It’s a little uneven and tries to do too many things at once, but at its core it’s a really fun and inspired modern ghost story. The star of the show (and what really sold the book for me) is messy social media grifter Sarah Slade, an iconic protagonist and first-person narrator. The author really nails her voice and gives us a pretty thoughtful exploration of her messed up character and her struggles. Looking forward to more Lisa Matlin books!
I definitely recommend this one if you’re into character-driven thrillers, doomscrolling, and slowly accepting the fact that you’ll never be able to buy a house unless someone was brutally murdered in it
