Throne of Jade
by Naomi Novik
Although my rating is probably more like a 3.5 -- I did think this was long in places, and there's only so much "the English find Chinese customs weird" I can do at a time -- I thoroughly enjoyed this second of the Temeraire books (even without Capt Roland, who I'm very fond of, for long stretches at a time).
I definitely thought that the contrast in philosophies about dragons, the ethical questions involved and personhood of dragons, along with the more naval-histories feel of the long sea voyage, were worth the slower pace at times. I'm very curious if there will be a return to questions of poverty among paid dragons or if that will just go hand waved.
And as always, Temeraire himself steals the show. Looking forward to the next one.
