My favourite out of this trilogy, for reasons that will become obvious.  This is the book that truly tells the story of the founding of Valdemar.  From Kordas becoming King, to the arrival of the Companions and the beginning of the Heraldic circle. Complete with a conflict with what I can only guess is an early M'arr-possessed individual.  This should not at all be your first book from the vast Valdemar series --- but if you are already a fan, this is the best of Lackey's recent output that brings us the closest to the stories we know and love from this world.  I can imagine she might follow this up with a series following the line of Valdemar, and the next challenges they face in growing their Kingdom... And I look forward to that.
