Two rival witch families, loosely based on the myths of Koschei and Baba Yaga, begin to face the consequences of their blood feud as tensions in each family increase. The ancient law of “An eye for an eye” only serves to escalate the rivalry. Meanwhile, Lev and Sasha, the youngest of each family, unwittingly meet at a bar. After hitting it off, they realize who they are to each other, but continue the affair anyways.

As a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, tragedy is inherent to the story. The resolution of this version, however, is particularly heartbreaking. I enjoyed the various ways that the families overlapped. Baba Yaga and Koschei, Maria and Dimitri, Lev and Sasha. All three pairs helped to tell the story of how the feud developed and how it tore them apart.

I liked the concept for this book, and I thought that Lev and Sasha were very cute. The middle of the book was a lot of scheming and miscommunication, which became difficult to keep track of. I went into the ending slightly confused, but enjoyed it nonetheless.
