Love as Always, Mum XXX: The True and Terrible Story of Surviving a Childhood with Fred and Rose West by Mae West

5.0

I don't think there's anyone in the UK who doesn't know who Fred and Rose West are. I remember learning about them in psychology lessons at school and being absolutely horrified.

I picked this up a couple of years ago but have only just got round to reading it and I wish I'd have read it sooner.

It's written by Mae West, Fred and Rose's daughter (who goes by a different name in real life to keep anonymity) and tells the story of her childhood and how she adapted into adulthood after learning of her parents' awful crimes.

This book is seriously disturbing and some of the things that Mae and her siblings suffered at the hands of their parents is absolutely horrifying. It made me uncomfortable to read and I had to keep putting this book down to have a break from it.

Hearing Mae's relationship with her mom and how it's only into her adulthood that she realises she was manipulated was so interesting for me and I really hope Mae is now at peace and can move on with her life.

There's a lot of trigger points in this book; rape, incest, manipulation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, murder, torture so I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but if it's something that you're able to cope with, I'd definitely suggest reading this!
