The Old Nurse's Story by Elizabeth Gaskell
3.0
'The Old Nurse's Story':
3.5 stars.
I liked the atmosphere Gaskell created in this one. You have the large house with closed off quarters, the snowy Fells, winds constantly battering against the window, and an eerie child roaming on the Northumberland moors. I think this worked really well as a Gothic tale. However, the only reason I'm rating it down is for the ending. It was very anticlimactic - I'm still not sure what really happened there?
'Curious, if True':
3 stars.
Whilst lost and wandering in France, our protagonist ends up at a party with characters who basically jumped right out of a fairy-tale. Again, I didn't really know what was happening in this one. The only reason I've given it three stars is for the whimsical and enchanting feel it possessed - the different characters really made up for the lack of plot. But if you asked me what happened, I'd come up blank.
