One Day by David Nicholls

4.0

Well. That was a rollercoaster of a story. Although this story is older, One Day reminds me of Normal People, which I finished earlier this year. The story of two people who are so desperately flawed and "perfect" for each other, that it's heartbreaking to read how much they don't realize it themselves.

Neither character is particularly likable and that is precisely what makes them relatable. Emma's heartbreak, challenges, and struggles were so deeply felt that at times, I felt as though it was foreshadowing a possible future of my own. Dexter was just an arse. He continued to be an arse throughout and yet, I couldn't help but like him for it. It was who he was and what made him fit with Emma so well.

And that ending arc. Subconsciously, I knew it was coming and when it happened, I had to "reread" (re-listen?) it a few times before it sunk it. Did I cry at work? Yes. I will admit unashamed that I cried at work and blamed it on a client. This is a story that is going to stick with me for a few days and one that needs a lighter novel to succeed it.

I may have to take a lie down and rewrite this review in a few days.
