Princess of Glass by Jessica Day George

3.0

I think this book was even more disappointing than the first one for me because it started so much stronger than the first. It felt like the retelling was grounded more firmly in a real person, unlike the first book where, though Rose was the main daughter of focus, all 12 princesses were important. The character development for Poppy was fantastic. At the start, so was that of Christian. The roots of the story also felt more deliberate and thoughtful. I really did love the way that she was able to take the traditional 'Cinderella' story and give it the background for it to feel real, even though it's based in witchcraft and magic. However, this book was ruined for me with its ending. Which is why I was forced to rate it so poorly. The ending was, in a word, rushed. All of the action and intrigue which had been building so eloquently just kind of ended with little description and none of the care that seemed to go into the rest of it. It seemed like she had a page limit, and couldn't go over it, so the ending had to be squashed into half the space it should have taken. Sigh. I guess if I'm being generous, it would be a 3.5-4 for 75% of the book, and a solid 2 for the last 25%. I'll round up and give it a 3. But it was seriously disappointing to come so far and not finish strong.
