There are two big things that I took away from this read: the first is that I am really picky when it comes to kids in books. I think having children as characters can really flesh out your grownups and give them a depth that we as readers otherwise wouldn’t be able to see in them. But if you treat your kids as props you really do the readers and characters an injustice. And I can’t tell if Cadence was used as a prop or if Lauren was meant to be portrayed as a human first and mom somewhere way after.

The second is that these characters reaaaallly weren’t lovable. They were full of mistakes and miscommunication and outright mean behavior. However, I think all too often we read books that include characters that are created to only be lovable? And sometimes the best stories involve the most annoying people. So, if you’re looking for a book full of human mistakes, at times infuriating behavior, a kid who is involved in probably 3% of the book, and light spanking then this is the book for you.
