JR by William Gaddis

3.0

"The reader be damned!" I imagine Gaddis thinking as he toiled on this juggernaut throughout the years. Major achievement? Yes. Enjoyable? Not often enough for the work it takes. No chapters, constant dialogue with only context clues to help you figure out who is talking, at times hilarious, always frustrating. With that said, he's tapped into the reality of capitalism and the nation in a way few have been. It feels as if nothing has changed from then to now. It foretells Trump in a lot of ways. He is aware of a so many injustices that every once in a while I forget he's criticizing them. Not for the faint of heart, but then again, you knew that going in, didn't you?
