A Memory Called Empire
by Arkady Martine
I really wanted to like this book. Memory blending with the dead? An ambassador to a vast empire? But I just couldn’t connect with it on any level.
The villains were incompetent, there were no big twists, this intrigue-based society was too open and trusting, the AI system was under-explored, and I didn’t connect with any of the characters. I rarely think this, but this book could have used about 100 pages at the start to establish the main character and her implanted memories before the first chapter. I felt I never got to know or understand her values or goals, even from inside her own head.
