The Path to Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson I by Robert A. Caro

5.0

While the whole volume is excellent, there are some parts of this book that absolutely sing.
The fascinating and heartbreaking description of the nature of the soil in the hill country and it’s societal concequences. The deeply empathetic chapter about the hard lives of rural women before the arrival of electricity. The miniature biography of Sam Rayburn and his fights on behalf of those without a voice. The thrilling sequences that show Lyndon’s deftness and drive for getting things done. Lastly the splendid takedowns of this deeply flawed man and his ceaseless striving, which reveal the shallowness in him that was so handsomely rewarded.
