The Third Renunciation by Matthew Henry

challenging emotional funny hopeful inspiring reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

Matthew E. Henry's The Third Renunciation provides exactly the type of writing about God, prayer, + the spirit that I find most compelling. It's utterly human and honest, not performative in the ways that the worst kind of spiritual writing can be. It's in conversation with theology and the church, but also with everyday experiences, from the mundane to the horrific, and a variety of writers. It rails against God, then turns back to God. Is drawn to God and appalled by God. It does not seek easy resolution. And it's also just imaginative, unique, and really good, poetic writing! A striking read no matter the spiritual questions you're wrestling with (or avoiding).
