Exactly what you expect to happen in this novel is what happens. I found April and Marcus to be annoyingly perfect and too in-tune with their feelings and actions. Sure, he’s gorgeous (but dyslexic!) and she’s intelligent and beautiful (but fat! (her words)) and they’re both damaged from terrible parents, but of course they’re perfect for each other. And of course they got to really know each other anonymously in online fanfic groups years before they actually met. And of course he’s blond and blue-eyed and she’s a fiery redhead.

So many cliches and tropes that just were not presented in a more original or better way. I might forgive any one of the above, but all together they are saccharinely sweet and just really annoying.

The conflicts within the story are obvious. They have no real depth or consequences, even though we’re told over and over how terrible (not really) they actually are for the characters. Of course they each are strengthened by their love and relationship to confront their terrible parents, to rousing success.

The sex scenes were explicit, but not good. I hate when writers use euphemisms for parts. You want me to read about desire and the male character’s expertise in cunnilingus (of course) but you can’t use another term for vulva, clitoris, or vagina except for “her sex”? Please. And apparently he only has a penis, because nothing else is mentioned about his genitals.

Oh, yes, their sex is always wonderful and always mutually satisfying, which isn’t to say that’s not what can happen, but on top of everything else, it’s just another layer of eye-rolling annoyance.

I can’t believe this is the first of a series. I will definitely pass on the sequels. The only reason I actually finished this novel is because I had nothing else to listen to and I needed a break from podcasts.
