An entertaining read about a woman and her two children whose lives were upended when it was uncovered that her husband is a serial killer.
When the book begins, notorious serial killer Mel Royal is behind bars, arrested for his crimes which were only uncovered by a timely accident at the house. His ex-wife Gina (now going by Gwen) and their two children are constantly on the run, forced to change their identities to avoid the publicity that follows wherever they go.
The public has never accepted that Gina/Gwen could possibly have avoided knowing what her husband was doing. She was tried and acquitted of being an accomplice, but that hasn't stopped the public perception that the courts got it wrong.
Finally trying to set some roots in a small lakeside Tennessee town known has Stillhouse Lake, Gwen and her children are slowly able to catch a breath and actually find friends and a life away from their past and the internet trolls. Or can they?
When a body turns up in a lake, Gwen becomes a natural suspect and it becomes clear that she can't outrun their past forever.
This is one of those books that I've seen recommended on basically every corner of the internet for years. I found the beginning to be an absolute slamdunk, followed by a bit of a slow crawl for about 50%, and then a fast-paced race to the finish. The ending definitely made this one, as it didn't have a lot of twists until the last 20%.
Entertaining and I certainly grabbed the second in the trilogy after a bit of a cliffhanger ending hooked me in!
