The Spymistress by Jennifer Chiaverini
4.0
The Spymistress was a novel chock full of details. I found it both engaging and informative. Lizzie Van Lew was an impressive woman who went to great lengths for the Union. While there is not a lot of character development throughout the book I didn’t find it necessary. At the point Virginia secedes Lizzie is a woman set firmly in her ways who knows who she is. Apart from Lizzie most of the other characters are there in service to her story so you don’t get much depth of character there either.
This is my second book by Chiaverini and I’m finding I really enjoy her writing style. In both books dialogue has been limited but the stories are full of information. The settings are beautifully created and Chiaverini really brings you into the past which I appreciate. I’m excited to read more by her
