An Invisible Thread by Alex Tresniowski, Laura Schroff

I don't know about the whole destiny thing, but this is a lovely memoir about the relationship of Miss Laura and Maurice. Laura had her challenges with an alcoholic father and a mother who died too young. Her combination of tenacity, hard work, and salesmanship brought her to the pinnacle of a successful career by her mid-thirties. Maurice's challenges included a violent, largely absent father, seriously drug-addicted mother, grandmother and uncles, and unbelievable neglect. The stories from his childhood make for some tough reading. But this is a story of hope and of a friendship which transformed both people's lives. The cynic might think it is a "white woman saves poor black boy" story but both Maurice and Miss Laura filled a hole in each other's life.
