xopher 's review for:
The Yiddish Policemen's Union
by Michael Chabon
Not as good as Kavalier and Klay, but a great read, and far more complete in its sense of reality than most alternate history books that I've read. Even as a goy, I've had a love of Yiddish for years, and I found myself incorporating the sound and rhythm into my thoughts after putting down the book. Also: learn the word zugzwang. It's one of the chess terms most relevant to everyday life. Zugzwang is more common than checkmate in everyday life, if not necessarily on the board.
