The City of Ember
by Jeanne DuPrau
One of many books chosen for my 4th grade "Battle of the Books", I don't remember that much about City of Ember over 6 years later, but what I do remember is definitely worth 5 stars.
This series got off to a strong start with this book, and since I'm not going to review all four books right now, I'll summarize here:
City of Ember- ***** Really good, unique, introduced us to this world and ended on a promising note
People of Sparks- *** Almost did not finish. The hype of the first one was real, but the second one fell so far flat that I lost almost all interest in the series. If you are reading this and considering giving up on the series, DON'T. I swear it gets better.
Prophet of Yonwood- **** Better than PoS but still not as good as CoE, mostly because we had no idea how this was supposed to connect to the universe the first two books created. Fortunately, at the end all was revealed (
Diamond of Darkhold- ***** YES. All the way yes. I knew there had to be a reason I persisted with the series, and Diamond of Darkhold is that reason. The book did something I was always hoping it would do: and was completely satisfying by the end.
Overall the series was great, but if you chose to stop after CoE instead of reading the entire series, it wouldn't kill you. Was DoD worth reading PoS and PoY? Yes, of course, but I probably wouldn't do it again.
