We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates

Ugh. I got to page 36 and could go no further. She wrote this in a way where she mentions an incident, gives you pages and pages of completely unrelated back story, and when she gets back to the current event it's so uninteresting I'm left wondering why I didn't just skip ahead. So that's what I did. I skipped ahead one hundred pages to where they finally reveal what happened to the sister. It's not that I couldn't take the suspense, I just thought the suspense would be too prolonged, and one hundred pages seems to prove me right. If I can't connect to the characters, why should I read an extensive book about them? Not interested. Read some summaries on Goodreads and now I never have to waste my life finishing this.
