Walter Kaufmann's translation is excellent; I have no complaints. He includes the original German on the facing pages, which was delightful.
J'ai lu aussi la traduction française faite par Gérard de Nerval en 1827. Remarquablement, de Nerval n'avait que 19 ans lorsqu'il a traduit la pièce; apparemment, von Goethe lui-même lui a écrit en disant « je ne me suis jamais si bien compris qu'en vous lisant ».

Hätte ich im Deutschunterricht so die Reimschemata gewechselt und so unsauber gereimt, hätte ich eine sechs bekommen. Die Handlung braucht ewig, um sich zu entwickelt und wird in Unnützem so ziemlich erstickt, die spannendsten Momente geschehen abseits des Stückes und werden übersprungen und außer wenigen guten Zitaten hat das Stück absolut keinen Reiz. Im Gegenteil, das ist ziemlich sexistisch. Wieso zum Teufel wird das von Germanisten noch so geliebt?and I can't honestly disagree with any of it.
