Saving Max by Antoinette van Heugten

3.0

Read this book twice now. It’s something I’ll hold onto, but not something I’d immediately recommend if someone asked for recs. It’s a bit of a thick book but the story was paced quickly and I finished it in two days.

The reason I only gave 3 stars is that none of the characters were very likable- Danielle, the main character, annoyed me with how often she was willing to break the law, despite being a lawyer. Max wasn’t developed enough in the story, so it was hard to feel bad for him or relate to him, despite having autism myself. We never know how different his behavior actually is at the psych ward, because none of his earlier behavior is described. Marianne and Danielle’s relationship was never really dove into, we are just supposed to ‘know’ they became good friends. I would’ve liked some more exploration into their friendship. The court scenes were difficult to follow as I’m not too familiar with those processes, and the judge’s behavior was very frustrating and egotistical.

At the end of the day, this book was good entertainment and a quick read for me personally, but it seemed a bit incomplete in some aspects. The very ending was a nice twist though.

Trigger warnings for suicide, child abuse, and graphic self harm.
