The Burning Bridge by John Flanagan
3.0
This was even better than the first one! Maybe it's because there was less headhopping? Unsure, but I enjoyed this. Not only did it have less of one of my writing pet peeves, it also was a really fun exploration of battle tactics, with a nice tie back to them at the end. I am constantly impressed by Flanagan's adept understanding of medieval life and war.
My central issues with this book lied in how certain characters' storylines obviously had more weight than others. I cared less about daily life at the castle than I did about how our protagonists' lives were in danger, and while I appreciated the attempt to even them out, I would have preferred a bit more weight to the subplot. I also felt like Will regressed here, and didn't really have an arc; in an attempt to show off his nerves and him getting in his own head, he seemed to become more childlike. While this is not a character driven book (which I absolutely love, give me plot!), I prefer consistent characters who always seem to be progressing.
