The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson

4.0

There is no better mix of mystery, teen drama and setting like this series. Johnson's heavenly prep school for only the most interesting and accomplished is certainly fantastical, but as far as teens behaving the way teens will with a good blend of characters, she's on the money. The romances are never the highlight of the book, but there certainly are some - and you'd never put this mix of kids into this setting without it.

While one aspect of the modern murders moves along and gets solved, there's also more clues about the mystery involving the family of the school's founder from the 30s, and both timelines end on total cliffhangers. If you are looking for a modern Nancy Drew, look no further - Stevie is as close as you'll get.
