Where Wolves Don't Die by Anton Treuer

emotional reflective tense
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? Yes
I loved the coming-of-age story and Ezra's relationship with his Grandpa Liam and life along the trapline. The thriller/crime piece was more of a B plot and I was fine with that since I found the other pieces more interesting and endearing.

Having heard Dr. Treuer speak, and especially about his children as they grow in Ojibwe community traditions, deepened my appreciation for the book as I read. This book did a great job of weaving culture with story, and I could see a lot of young adult readers enjoying the mix of adventure and heart.
