To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini
2.0

I debated whether or not I was even going to add this book to my count this year. I've gotten to a point in my reading that if I DNF something, I don't really review it unless I have passionate thoughts on it. In the case of this book, I read about 182 or so pages before deciding to DNF. In most books that's close to halfway through, and I decided I did want this to count.

I was a little wary of this book since the two Eragon books I read made me so angry with the blatant Star Wars rip-offs. I was worried this one was going to be ripping off of Mass Effect, especially after I saw that Commander Shepard herself was doing the audiobook. Luckily the similarities end after the main character encounters a beacon that turns out to link her to an alien life-form. Or does it? I don't know, like I said I'm putting this on the DNF pile. It didn't feel as obvious a rip-off as Eragon was doing with Star Wars.

This is going on the DNF pile because I really did not like how Paolini was writing his female main character. It's pretty obvious to anyone who's read a book before that the fiance Alan is two days away from retirement the moment he's introduced, so that part wasn't too bad. It was when Kira was moaning about how ugly she looked now and how no one was going to love her. Girl, seriously? This kind of introspective happened twice in the 180-some pages I read. I feel like there were bigger things Kira could've been focusing on, like the fact that she saw this alien suit kill all her friends, or the fact that this huge galactic war started, or that an entire ship was blown up over the alien suit. But no, she's got to worry about her looks. I'm not saying I would've been okay with this if a woman had written it, but I sure wasn't okay with a man writing it.

I gave him a valiant effort, but I just don't think Paolini is an author I can get into.
