i really enjoyed this book! i’m intrigued by any art that explores the strange dissonance of clinging onto the idea you have of a parent whilst battling the fact they are a real person and i so so understand wanting to know everything about who they are. i don’t think i’ve ever had or ever will have even a single conversation in this vein with my own mum and i regretfully don’t have the beautiful relationship with her spiegelman appears to share with her mother. and my nan is dead! i teared up a lot. memories are fickle things - “somehow in her memories the song her daughter had sung to her had become the song she used to sing to her own mother. and through the haze of overlapping generations, the unrequited love was real”
