Fear the Drowning Deep by Sarah Glenn Marsh

2.0

*spoilers*

This was giving me Wicked Deep vibes at first, but I would definitely recommend that one rather than this one.

I think this book could have been really cool if it were a bit more atmospheric, and got more involved in the setting/witchcraft/culture rather than the romance between Bridey and her horse boy. Honestly the only thing that made me want to keep reading was waiting to see if he would actually be the horse boy as I so hoped it would be, and then after that I was just bored. I didn't feel the tension of it, and I felt like a massive serpent terrorising a town is something I would vibe with but alas. I liked Morag as a character, how the town alienated her (and then Bridey), and I also thought Bridey's fear of the ocean (yet it being in every part of her life) made things interesting. But things with Fynn were just so insta-lovey, and of course him and Lugh were immediately at each other's throats, and then oh no he's a horse boy but oop I love him. Plus he ??? Lures girls to their deaths too?? and the only reason he didnt kill her was because their blood touched?? sis that was glossed over so quickly

Bridey's family was cool - they were protective of Fynn and each other, but pretty chill too, and her parents were interesting! Basically I feel this would have been more engaging if the focus was in a different place - more thrillery than paranormal romance. A cool premise though!
