The Last Thing to Burn
by Will Dean
Jane is a hostage, she lives on a farm with her hideous husband Lenn. Her name is not Jane it is Thanh Dao and she came to England in the back of a lorry with her sister Kim-Ly. They like many others are sold a lie of a great life and what she gets is imprisonment, brutality and abuse. This book is really difficult to read in places but oh my! I could not stop reading and I finished in one afternoon.
Lenn is really the vilest person I have ever read about and poor Thanh Dao he repeatedly punishes her as she tries again and again to escape. Something changes and Lenn has her even more under his control with his punishments and drugging her. She has a broken ankle that he caused after she tried to run away previously and she is in constant pain. He watches her every move and records her and watches it back so she has no way of escape and she has tried. He tries to break her bit by bit but she lives to find her sister and see her family in Vietnam again.
This really is a remarkable story about the human spirit and hope. Thanh uses one of my favourite books Of Mice and Men amongst other items as her comfort. Every page ramps up the tension and it will leave your nerves shattered as the book reaches its finale. A hard review to write as I would hate to spoil this book for anyone as I absolutely devoured it.
A fantastic book !
