When by Victoria Laurie

3.0

When is a YA mystery novel that follows Maddie Flynn: a teen with the ability to read people’s “death dates”. They appear on everyone’s foreheads, and for some unknown reason, Maddie has always been able to see them, and they have never been wrong.
When a woman comes asking Maddie about her children, Maddie tells her that her son is going to die soon. When that boy goes missing, Maddie is dragged into suspicion by the FBI for having something to do with his disappearance.

POSITIVES:
* really like the main character - she's likeable and relatable
* really cool concept - feels original and exciting
* touches on some really important issues such as substance abuse and bullying
-
NEGATIVES:
* after around 50 pages, it didn't feel as though too much was happening - just felt like we were following Maddie around and that nothing much was given back
* wasn't as thrilling or captivating as I was expecting
* writing style felt a little weak at times, and certain characters felt a bit cringe-worthy

Overall, this was a book with a good concept, but one that I felt could have been expanded a little more, and one that I wished had gotten into depth a bit earlier so that my attention was held more.
